Poker Face & Successful Negotiation: Holy Grail of Business & Government?
B REXIT is the most significant change to the structure focus and direction of this nation in the long term since the end of the second world war. This will define our nation for generations to come. Notwithstanding that it will also determine and influence what happens in Europe and the rest of the world.  What we do from here on in is crucial.  This is an opportunity to affect positive change across the world without the hinderance of protectionist doctrine in the institutions of the European Union.

Every strategic process that fosters success in any negotiation cites the need for secrecy, command and control which is not democratic; its for the electorate to trust in the elected to do the bidding of the majority. This however is going to be challenged by those that may not wish to accept the will of the majority which is the fear of many a Brexiteer and the woe of every Remainer. The terminology of describing the two camps have connotations of division.  Has not the time come to focus on the forthcoming negotiations?

The business of business is business in government.  Strategy of winning in business is founded on competitive advantage and Porters Generic Strategies describes it eloquently, where the source of competitive advantage is based on differentiation and costs, the cost of leadership and the differentiation leaders along broad lines and cost focus and differentiation focus along narrow lines.

Strategies from Sun Tzu can be equally applied to business rely on obtaining competitive advantage, three of which are as follows: 

“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without even fighting”. We need to have a plan of action, we need to know what we want, how we want it, and what we are prepared to do in order to achieve it.

“Know thyself, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories”. If you know, who you are, if you know where you are in the scheme of things, if you know where your competitors when compared to you this triangulation will help you navigate your way through to your objectives.

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first then seek to win”.  If you have studied and executed the above then you are a victorious warrior and you have won before you set out to a business meeting.  You’ve understood the fundamentals of your business, your objectives, and the objectives of your client/partner/supplier. You've understood the relationship before you engage, you understand the dynamics of the game and you know what effort is required to achieve a win.

What can the PLP learn? What can the Tory Government Learn? What can we learn?  

A victory is only won when unity of purpose is one.  The question of victory is in creating the circumstances that facilitate a victory. Its doubtful that any leader can win outright alone, a leader needs the power of the people and his or her generals to execute a strategy, its both broad and narrow.  

The opportunities for business advancement are astronomical; the future of our nation and the future direction of the free world is dependant upon how we navigate through the forthcoming negotiations. Unity of purpose is key, detracting from the fact or continuing to attempt destabilise BREXIT will only serve those that wish to see us subdued and subservient.
